2 JUNE 2020 - Deep-sea study of the Earth’s crust receives $1.65 million NSERC-CREATE grant
Prof. Melissa Anderson and a group of Canadian collaborators just received a $1.65-million Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to train dozens of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows over the next six years in Marine Geodynamics and Georesources. The students will take part in expeditions at sea and on land around the world and benefit from the expertise of international leading researchers in geodynamics and georesources, while receiving hands-on training in the application of marine technology.

The University of Toronto and the Marine Resources and Tectonics group hosted the “Steve Scott Symposium on collaborative research off Canada’s west coast” on Friday, September 13, led by Prof. John Jamieson (MUN). A group of multi-disciplinary researchers met (in person and virtually) to discuss challenges and new opportunities for research on the Juan de Fuca plate, and the future of marine science in Canada.

Sofia Panasiuk, the Mineral Resources and Tectonic Group’s Bathymetry Database Assistant, learns MBES data processing techniques and software to create maps of the sea-floor. A new paper by Anderson et al. has been published in the latest issue of Economic Geology: “Mineralization and alteration of a modern seafloor massive sulfide deposit hosted in mafic volcaniclastic rocks.” This detailed study is one of the few to examine fluid-rock interactions and mineralizing processes in the subseafloor of a modern hydrothermal system, with a focus on a newly-discovered deposit in the Jean Charcot Troughs. Prof. Melissa Anderson (left) and M.Sc. student Talia Moum (right) return from a 5-week expedition to the Reykjanes Ridge, North Atlantic, onboard the R/V Neil Armstrong. They joined a team of American and Icelandic researchers to conduct geophysical surveys on the flanks of the ridge to determine the timing and geometry of the large-scale tectonic reorganizations that occurred there in the Paleogene and continue to the present.
